This month, Discover sits down with Reign, founding member of GUTTĖRKISS, for a conversation with Maya.

THE INTERVIEW

MAYA: Reign, thanks for sitting down with me. GUTTĖRKISS has been around long enough now that people have had a chance to form their own idea of what this group is.

MAYA: When you look at GUTTĖRKISS right now, what do you see?

REIGN: (Looks around) Me. (Shrugs shoulders)

MAYA: Just you? What do you mean by that?

REIGN: I mean… where the fuck is everyone? Where they at? Where they been? I haven’t seen them in a minute now.

MAYA: Wait. Are you saying you don’t know where the rest of GUTTĖRKISS is?

REIGN: Yeah. We haven’t recorded in over four months. I haven’t really seen any of them. Fuck. Even my sister, Rayza.

MAYA: Four months? That’s a long time for a group that’s supposed to still be together. What happened four months ago?

REIGN: Nothing. Salem and Scarlata been working together, outside the Kiss. Rayza? I mean, I like it and all. She is doing some DJ work.

MAYA: You said you “like it and all” about Rayza doing DJ work. That sounds like there’s a but coming. What’s the but?

REIGN: Shit. This whole thing started with just us two. Then it became us five. We fucking killed this shit. Can’t nobody say we didn’t. But look at us. All you see is—

(Opens arms wide)

REIGN: Me.

MAYA: Does that piss you off, or does it hurt?

REIGN: Whatever. Fuck this. I’m about to kill this shit on my own. I don’t care. Watch the fuck out. Bitches better be warned. I don’t care who steps. That bitch-ass “knife” from New York. Or the other bitch.

MAYA: Hold on. “That bitch-ass ‘knife’ from New York”—who are you talking about?

REIGN: A nobody. Some wack-ass bitch rapper the label tried to push.

MAYA: The label tried to push her? Push her how—against GUTTĖRKISS, or were they trying to put her in your lane?

REIGN: She doesn’t even matter. None of them do. When I started this, we had rage. We had hatred. We had shit we wanted—needed to say. We said that. People heard us. Now where are we?

(Slams fist through wall)

REIGN: They tried this concept album with us. You probably heard it. NWO: The Invasion or whatever. It’s fake. It’s bullshit. I fucking hated that record.

MAYA: You hated NWO: The Invasion? Why did you make it, then?

REIGN: This music business. Have you ever been in it?

MAYA: No. So tell me what that means. What happened with that record?

REIGN: It was a concept album. That’s all. Supposed to have a second part. That ain’t happening. Not with me.

MAYA: “Not with me” sounds pretty final. Are you saying you’re done with that album—or are you saying you’re done with GUTTĖRKISS?

REIGN: I don’t fucking know. Or care right now.

MAYA: Then what do you care about right now?

REIGN: (Sighs)

MAYA: Take your time.

(Reign sits quietly for several seconds before standing)

REIGN: I’m done.

(Reign leaves the interview)
